DesignCon: Personal Reflections on the Past Twenty Years

By Istvan Novak

DesignCon has been a tremendous source of information for myself and for the team I have been working with at SUN Microsystems, which later became part of Oracle Corporation. This summary is an attempt to capture some of the most influential papers from the past twenty years that made the biggest impact on our work.

Time to Drink from the Firehose Again

Time to Drink from the Firehose Again

By Eric Bogatin

I’ve been attending and presenting at DesignCon for 28 years since the first HP High Speed Digital Symposium. And every year, it’s been the same thing, overloaded with too many great talks, too many companies’ latest products to see and too many online friends to finally meet in person. Learn more about Eric’s naïve DesignCon wish list.

Mainstream SERDES Design and Analysis

So you're designing SerDes links running between 5 and 25 Gbps? What do you need to look at to make sure that your board will work the first time, and meet your performance goals? It depends on the protocol, and can involve time-domain metrics such as eye masks or frequency-domain metrics such as insertion loss. Attendees will learn requirements for simulating popular SerDes protocols and new analysis methods.

Effective Return Loss for 112G and 56G PAM 4

This presentation proposes using a pulse echo for time domain reflectometry (TDR) rather the commonly used step function echo. The echoed pulse response of a single symbol is convolved with the modulation signal levels to produce an effective reflection coefficient metric at a specified bit error ratio (BER). Learn more.
