SerDes protocols, such as PCIe Gen6, USB4, and the 100G per-lane Ethernet and OIF/CEI standards, offer multiple challenges for PCB designers. For example, speeds are approximately doubling for each generation, but to keep costs down, the circuit board material is often the same as previous generations. Complex equalization techniques can compensate for the increased loss at higher data rates.

To learn important aspects of the most popular interconnect specifications, with a focus on equalization techniques for serial interfaces, read “Channel Equalization Techniques for Serial Interfaces.”
